Scrum PAL-I Exam - Topic 4 Question 20 Discussion

Actual exam question for Scrum's PAL-I exam
Question #: 20
Topic #: 4
[All PAL-I Questions]

You manage a development organization. The organization currently rewards individual performance bonuses to only a few top-performers on a yearly basis. As a result, only one member of a team might get a bonus, while all others get nothing. Some of your teams feel that this is unfair since everyone on a team contributes to the success or failure to achieve goals. They would like to move toward team bonuses. What do you think needs to be done? (choose the best answer)

Show Suggested Answer Hide Answer
Suggested Answer: A

In Agile, success is the result of collective effort, and team-based rewards encourage collaboration and a shared sense of responsibility. When bonuses are allocated based on individual performance, it can create competition within teams, which may lead to disengagement or reduced teamwork. Allowing the team to split the bonus reinforces the Agile values of collaboration, trust, and transparency.

Haha, good luck getting the high-performers to agree to split their bonus. They'll fight tooth and nail for that extra cash!

Why not both? Allocate a portion for team bonuses and a portion for individual high-performers. Gotta keep everyone happy!

Hmm, I'm not sure. Rewarding top performers is still important to drive individual excellence.

I agree, team bonuses are more fair and will motivate everyone to work together towards the common goal.

Rewarding individual performance is outdated. Team-based bonuses are the way to go to foster collaboration.

I feel like we practiced a similar question before. I think team bonuses could foster collaboration, but I worry about fairness in distribution.

This reminds me of a case study we did on performance incentives. I think rewarding high-performers is important, but it might be worth considering a team approach too.

I'm not sure if just giving the bonus to the team is the best approach. What if some team members don't contribute as much?

I'm leaning towards option B. Rewarding individual high-performers is important for driving motivation and recognizing exceptional contributions. As long as the process is transparent, I don't see a big issue with the current approach.

I think the team bonus is the way to go here. It will encourage more collaboration and shared accountability, which is important for achieving team goals. Allocating the bonus to the team and letting them decide how to split it up seems like the best solution.

I remember discussing the importance of team dynamics in our last class. Maybe allocating the bonus to the team could improve morale?

Hmm, this is a tough call. I can see the fairness argument for team bonuses, but I also don't want to lose the incentive for individual excellence. Maybe a hybrid approach could work?

This seems like a tricky one. I'm not sure if I should go with the team bonus approach or stick with rewarding individual high-performers. I'll need to think through the pros and cons of each option.
