B seems like the right answer to me. The port number is what the receiving application is listening on, so that's how the IP datagram knows where to deliver the data.
Okay, I think I've got it. The port field in the transport layer header, like TCP or UDP, is what identifies the specific application that the data is being sent to. The protocol field just tells you the transport layer protocol being used.
Hmm, I'm a bit confused on this one. Is it the protocol field or the port field that identifies the receiving application? I'll have to think this through carefully.
