Okay, I've got this! The first step is to organize the advocacy messages into Campaigns, which will let the nonprofit track the Contacts who take action. Then they should use an advocacy platform from the AppExchange that syncs to Salesforce - that will provide the functionality to record which supporters sent the messages. Easy peasy!
