Based on the diagram, I'd say the best place to put the VSX keepalive link is on a dedicated link created using port 1'1/48 of each aggregation switch. That should keep the aggregation layer protected.

The key here is understanding the different backup types and their properties. A full backup can include all the necessary components, but I'm not sure if it's always the case. I'll need to review my notes on this.
