I thought that styles defined in the parent would automatically be inherited by the child components, but now I'm second-guessing that.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think any custom styles need to be defined in a shared CSS file if we want them to be consistent across both components.

I remember that the shadow DOM encapsulates styles, so I think the styles from the parent won't apply to the child components.
