What are the ITIL guiding principles used for?

Show Suggested Answer Hide Answer
Suggested Answer: D

Don't start from scratch and build something new without considering what you already have. It's almost always better to improve what you currently have than to throw it all away and start again, although you must also be able to recognise when a complete replacement is, in fact, needed.

Not only is this approach less wasteful than starting from scratch -- because it preserves value that you already have -- but it also helps you to keep your people on board. They're much more likely to support the changes you need if their previous contributions have been appropriately valued.

Don't rely on metrics and reports to tell you what the current situation is. When you carry out an assessment you should observe what is happening for yourself, and just use the metrics to support your observations.

I'm just picturing an ITIL expert standing over an organization, remote in hand, shouting 'You're doing it wrong!' No, the principles are there to help, not control. Option A is the clear winner here.

Ensuring stakeholder expectations are met is important, but that's more of an outcome than a purpose. The ITIL principles are there to guide the organization, not just keep them on track.

Hah, 'identify activities'? That's like saying the Ten Commandments are a to-do list. The ITIL principles are about providing a framework for decision-making, not a step-by-step instruction manual.

I agree with Bette. The ITIL guiding principles are all about empowering organizations to make the right choices, not micromanaging them. Option A is the way to go.

The ITIL guiding principles are not meant to direct and control an organization, but rather to help them make good decisions. Option A seems to be the correct answer here.
