Question #: 87
Topic #: 5
[All NAPLEX Questions]

You need 51.3 mEq of NaCl to make 1/3 NS 1 liter bag. How many ml of 23.4% NaCl would you need? (Molecular weight of Na is 23 and Cl is 35.5)

Show Suggested Answer Hide Answer
Suggested Answer: A

The dihydropyridine drug -- nifedipine -- is the active ingredient found in the medicine Adalat. Nifedipine is used to treat angina, Reynaud's phenomenon and hypertension. It is also used as a tocolytic agent in premature labor.

How did you even get to that number? Seems complicated!

Just to confirm, 23.4% NaCl means 23.4g in 100ml.

I feel like I should be able to figure this out, but I'm second-guessing whether 23.4% is the right concentration to use for the calculation.

This seems similar to the question we did on IV solutions, but I can't remember if we used a different concentration for that one.

I think we need to use the molecular weight to find the grams first, then convert that to ml. I just can't recall the exact steps.

I remember we calculated mEq in a practice question, but I'm not sure how to convert that to ml of the solution.

Sounds good, I'm going to give it a try. This seems like the kind of question I need to practice to get comfortable with these types of calculations.

I think the key is to use the molecular weights of Na and Cl to convert the 51.3 mEq of NaCl into the mass of NaCl, and then use the 23.4% concentration to calculate the volume.

I'm a little confused about the 1/3 NS 1 liter bag part. Does that factor into the calculation, or is it just background information?

Okay, let's think this through step-by-step. We need to find the volume of 23.4% NaCl solution that would give us 51.3 mEq of NaCl.

This looks like a straightforward calculation, but I want to make sure I have the right approach before I start working through it.

From what I recall, getting agreement to release partially completed software isn't common in these meetings. They usually focus on quality issues.

Hmm, let me think this through... I'm going to go with C. 23.4ml, just because it's the same as the concentration of the NaCl solution.
