Which of the following Anti-epileptic medication can cause pancreatitis?

Show Suggested Answer Hide Answer
Suggested Answer: C

Cases of life-threatening pancreatitis have been reported in both pediatric and adult patients receiving valproic acid or its analogs. Patients should be warned that abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and/or anorexia can be symptoms of pancreatitis that require prompt medical evaluation. If pancreatitis is diagnosed, valproate should be discontinued.

I’m really unsure about this one. Gabapentin and levetiracetam don’t seem like they would cause pancreatitis, but I could be wrong.

I practiced a question similar to this, and I believe valproic acid was the answer there too.

I remember reading something about carbamazepine, but I don't think it's linked to pancreatitis like valproic acid is.

I think valproic acid is the one that can cause pancreatitis, but I'm not completely sure.

Ah, I'm drawing a blank on the specifics of which anti-epileptic meds can cause pancreatitis. I'll just have to make an educated guess and go with B.

I remember learning that valproic acid can cause pancreatitis, so I'm going to go with C on this one.

Okay, let me think this through. Carbamazepine, valproic acid, and phenobarbital are all common anti-epileptic drugs, so one of those is likely the answer. I'll eliminate the ones I'm less sure about and go with C.

Hmm, I'm not totally sure about this one. I know some anti-epileptic meds can cause pancreatitis, but I'd have to double-check my notes to be confident in the answer.

I'm pretty sure I've seen pancreatitis listed as a potential side effect of carbamazepine, so I'll go with A.
