Hah, I bet the sellers would love a solution that involves less code. Option B is probably the way to go, unless they really want to get their hands dirty with a plug-in.
Option D is an interesting choice, but I'm not sure it's the most efficient solution. A custom duplicate detection plug-in might be overkill for this scenario.
Hmm, I think Option C might be the best choice here. Creating a new duplicate detection rule for contacts could help catch any potential issues at the source.
