CIMAPRO19-P01-1 Exam - Topic 2 Question 53 Discussion

Actual exam question for CIMA's CIMAPRO19-P01-1 exam
Question #: 53
Topic #: 2
[All CIMAPRO19-P01-1 Questions]

LM operates a parcel delivery service. Last year its employees delivered 15,120 parcels and travelled 120,960 kilometers. Total costs were $194,400.

LM has estimated that 70% of its total costs are variable with activity and that 60% of these costs vary with the number of parcels and the remainder vary with the distance travelled.

LM is preparing its budget for the forthcoming year using an incremental budgeting approach and has produced the following estimates:

* All costs will be 3% higher than the previous year due to inflation

* Efficiency will remain unchanged

* A total of 18,360 parcels will be delivered and 128,800 kilometers will be travelled.

Calculate the following costs to be included in the forthcoming year's budget:

(i) the total variable costs related to the number of parcels delivered.

(ii) the total variable costs related to the distance travelled.

3% increase? Is that really enough for inflation?

Wait, are we sure about those distance costs? Seems off.

I think option A makes the most sense.

I feel like the parcel-related costs should be higher than the distance-related ones since they make up a larger portion of the variable costs, but I can't remember the exact numbers.

If I recall, we need to first find the variable cost per parcel and per kilometer, but I’m a bit confused about how to adjust for the 3% increase.

I remember that variable costs are based on the number of parcels and distance, but I'm not sure how to break them down correctly for the budget.

I think we practiced a similar question in class where we had to calculate variable costs based on delivery metrics. I hope I can apply that here.

Hmm, I'm a bit unsure about this one. I'll have to think it through carefully before answering.

This looks like a tricky one. I'll need to carefully consider the hardware differences and how to best configure the site servers.
