BCS TM12 Exam - Topic 5 Question 122 Discussion

Posted by Tamala on Mar 08, 2026 at 03:24 AM

Based on the historical data of 5 past and similar projects, you have calculated these average numbers of defects detected in system testing:

- for each 10000 LOC (lines of code), 200 defects

- for each person-month of development team effort, 49 defects

You want to use this information to perform estimation for a new project.

The project manager tells you that he/she has estimated 20000 new LOC for this new project.

Four developers work for four months on this project before system testing.

During system testing, 797 defects are discovered.

Assume that the system test of this new project is using the same amount of work as spent in the past projects.

Based on this information only, which of the following statement is certainly true about this project?

Number of correct responses: 1

Suggested Answer: B

D feels too extreme. Higher density could be true though.

C doesn't make sense. Only 20000 LOC planned.

Not sure, but B seems reasonable too.

I think option A is likely true.

D sounds plausible. Higher defects could mean more LOC delivered.

C is definitely wrong. Only 20000 LOC were planned.

I lean towards B. More effort usually means more defects found.

I think A might be true. 797 defects seem high.

D is misleading. We can't assume more LOC without proof.

C seems off. Only 20000 LOC were planned.

I feel B makes sense. Defects relate to effort.

I think A is true. Higher defect density is likely.

I agree, higher defect density seems likely with those numbers.
EL

Definitely more LOC than planned, but not sure about the defect density.

Wait, are they saying 40,000 LOC were delivered? That seems off!
TH
Thaddeus 6 months ago
I think the defects found are pretty much in line with the effort.

The average is 200 defects per 10,000 LOC.
SH

I agree, the defect density seems higher than before!
EL

Definitely more LOC than planned, but not sure about the defect density.
LE

Wait, are we sure they delivered 40k LOC? That seems off.

I think the defects found are pretty much in line with the effort.

The average is 200 defects per 10k LOC.

I’m leaning towards option D because if they found more defects than expected, it suggests a higher defect density, but I’m not completely confident about the LOC delivered.

I feel like I’ve seen a question like this before, and I think we can’t definitively say anything about the defect density without more context on the past projects.

I think option B might be true because the number of defects usually correlates with the effort, but I'm not entirely sure how to prove it with just this data.

I remember that defect density is calculated based on LOC, so if we have 20000 LOC, we should expect around 400 defects, not 797.
