Okay, I've got this. The key here is to use the instrumentation that's already in place, like Sqlcommenter and Cloud Trace. I'm going to focus on watching Cloud Trace for any failing application requests, since that seems like the most direct way to identify the root cause of the microservice failures. The other options are good too, but I think Cloud Trace is the way to go.
