I thought it was D) ~/.ssh/id_rsa at first!

Wait, isn't it A) ~/.ssh/authorized_keys?

Haha, E) ~./ssh/known_hosts? What is this, a trick question? That file just keeps track of the remote hosts you've connected to, not the keys.

D) ~/.ssh/id_rsa? Really? That's the private key, not the one you want to share with the remote server. Come on, people, let's get it together!

I always get those SSH key files mixed up. Is there a mnemonic device to remember which one is which?

C) ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub is the correct answer. That's the file that contains the public key that needs to be transmitted to the remote server.

I thought the private key was needed for logging in, but I guess we need to send the public key first? So, C) seems like the best choice.

I practiced a question like this, and I feel like the answer was related to the public key. But I’m confused between C) and D).

I'm not entirely sure, but I remember something about authorized keys being important for SSH access. Could it be A) ~/.ssh/authorized_keys?

I think it's the public key file, so maybe C) ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub? That sounds right.

Wait, is it the private key or the public key? I'm second-guessing myself now. I better review my SSH key concepts before answering this.

Easy peasy. The public key, id_rsa.pub, is what you send to the remote server. That's the file that needs to be in the authorized_keys file.

Agreed, that's the public key you need to share.

Okay, I've got this. The public key file, id_rsa.pub, needs to be added to the authorized_keys file on the remote server. That's how you set up SSH key-based login.

B) ~/.ssh/config? Nah, that's just for configuring your SSH client, not for authentication. Nice try, though!

Hmm, I'm a bit confused. Is it the private key or the public key that needs to be transmitted? I'll have to think this through carefully.

I think the answer is C. The public key file needs to be transmitted to the remote server for SSH key authentication.
