Nessus? That's a vulnerability scanner, not a process monitoring tool. I'm pretty sure that's not the correct answer either.

Ptrace? Really? That's more for tracing system calls, not identifying open ports. I don't think that's the right answer here.

I'm leaning towards lsof as well. It's a powerful tool that can really dig into the details of what's happening on the system.

Hmm, I'd say lsof is the way to go here. It's specifically designed to list open files and network connections, so it should be able to give us the PID we're looking for.
