A Microsoft SQL Server? That's overkill. I'm pretty sure the VAR just needs a simple database to store its reports.

Hmm, I'm not sure about that. I think it needs an application to reside on the VAR Server to process the data.

I'm not sure about the Microsoft SQL Server requirement, but I think setting up an abandoned threshold in the Application Profile is necessary.

The VAR definitely requires a client installed on the VCS. That's the only way it can collect data from the system.
